TN panel displays are the first type of gaming monitor that come to mind. But as technology developed, we began to see player monitors with various panel types. The lately well-liked IPS panel gaming monitors were one of them.
The game monitor we will be reviewing today, the Asus TUF Gaming VG249Q1R model, offers a 165 Hz refresh rate and a 1 MS MPRT response time. We can say that even though it has an IPS panel, the fluid image it provides is incredibly impressive.
It features a 23.8-inch dimension, as evidenced by the Asus TUF Gaming VG249Q1R player display model. The majority of gamers today favor 23.8 inches, although 27-inch monitors are likewise largely uninteresting in my opinion. It offers a nice advantage in this aspect, especially considering that FPS players favor flat, 23.8-inch panels. All three sides have narrow bezels, and the bottom bezel has a suitable thickness. It has an unobtrusive “ASUS” logo positioned in the center of it.
The device actually has a very tiny body, as we can see when we turn it around and look at the back. The upper section is quite thin. The “TUF Gaming” logos are positioned underneath the enormous “ASUS” emblem in the center. It is somewhat thicker than the top side because of the circuits, which is just typical.
The device is not a high-end one, as you can see. To demand drastically different designs would be unjust. The monitor’s base is shaped like a circle and has a few small details on it. It has a sophisticated and fashionable appearance. The joints are also made of metal, as you can see.
We already noted that this monitor is reasonably priced for the qualities it offers. Features like the 165 Hz refresh rate and 1 MS reaction time are particularly impressive. But some components were clipped in order to make it more inexpensive. We can conclude that this monitor’s ergonomic characteristics are subpar because you can only tilt it 5 degrees forward and 22 degrees back. Naturally, it is acceptable at this price point, but this was the most important aspect that was, in our opinion, overlooked.
Technical Details
In terms of response time, IPS panels fall short of TN panels. However, we can now say that technology has advanced to a point where it can now compete. The ghosting effect on IPS panels has been virtually eradicated by technologies like ELMB. Obviously, you can’t get as smooth of images as a TN panel, but this is where there has been a significant improvement.
Shadow Boost is one of the key components in today’s gaming monitors, and this monitor makes excellent use of this function. The dark and shadowy areas of the image are automatically lit up by this feature, which has four levels of brightness. It is now simpler for you to see what is concealed there.
When we look at the monitor’s ghosting test, we can tell that for this price range, the IPS panel actually performs admirably. Such performance in IPS panels with ELMB technology is absolutely nice to observe. Furthermore, the IPS display in question is not a premium model.
This display supports AMD FreeSync Premium. However, as you may already be aware, some models have the ability to activate G-Sync. We can see this by turning on the Nvidia G-Sync compatibility. In other words, if your graphics card is an Nvidia model, you can actively use G-Sync on this monitor. In this approach, tearing brought on by extremes in game FPS is avoided.
Well, if you’re interested in the game’s performance, we tested it with Valorant, one of the quick games. We were able to play the game pretty smoothly thanks to the high FPS. Although it had an IPS panel, the image was fairly fluid; yet, it wasn’t as responsive as a TN panel, so when we take an IPS panel into consideration, we can claim that it produced excellent results.
